With 2012 as the end of the Mayan calendar, many theories of apocalypse have been formed just as they did around the year 2000.  Hollywood is cashing in on the hype with hype with the movie 2012.  What's interesting about the Maya civilization is the fact that they were an advanced civlization with advanced knowledge of astronomy.  What fuels the fire of an apocalypse is the fact that the apolcalypse theories mostly stem from people who aren't Mayan.  As many know most of the Mayan culture, language and hieroglyphs were supressed after the Mayan civilizantion was conqured by foreigners.  One scientific opinion as written in this article shows that although not the end of the world, the Mayan ddate of 2012 may have astronomical significance as related to our sun.
