Hawai‘ian Quilt ʻUlu by Jon Apisa

Hawai'ian Quilt Ulu painting

Jon Apisa. Hawai‘ian Quilt ʻUlu. 2003. oil on canvas, 50" x 48" (127 cm x 121.9 cm).

The Hawai‘ian quilt painting is composed of ʻUlu (Artocarpus altilis also known as breadfruit) designs which are used often for Hawai‘ian print patterns. The symmetry of the pattern is broken by the smaller loosely painted ‘ulu designs. The saturated green references the color of leaves seen on an ʻUlu tree.

Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is known as:

  • ʻUlu in Sāmoa
  • ʻUlu in Hawaiʻi
  • ʻUru in Tahiti
  • Kuru in Maori language (Aotearoa)
  • Mei in Tonga
