Artist Notes:
Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi December 15, 2024
“ʻAniva | Hōkūnohoaupuni (Milky Way)” watercolor painting was based on observing the Milky Way in the night sky near the beach on Kauaʻi, Hawaiʻi where artificial light was minimal.
On specials nights, the sky is without the moon or clouds. There are places on the island far enough away from artificial night light and the sky becomes illuminated with only celestial objects.
I was able to view the sky over Kauaʻi on of those nights recently.
I choose to look for the Milky Way which is “ʻAniva | Hōkūnohoaupuni (Milky Way)” Sāmoa and “Hōkūnohoaupuni” in Hawai‘i.
Like many celestial objects viewed with only the eye, it is not as bright as viewing with a telescope or viewing highly edited photograph with a long duration shutter speed.
That considered, after minutes of adjustments for the eyes, the sky reveals itself much more than just a quick glance above.
It's amazing how there are so many stars in our own galaxy that they create the haze that defines the Milky Way. Our own star, one of many, our own galaxy one of many.
